This is a list of trees that will be available from which to choose.
Smaller Understory Trees
1. Autumn Blaze Maple: Acer x freeman
Description: Height to 50’ and width to 40’. Fast growing tree with rounded growth at maturity. Brilliant fall color.
Light requirements: Full sun
Soil tolerances: sand, loam, clay, acidic, slightly alkaline, well-drained
Drought tolerance: Good
Fruit: Seedless
2. Redbud: Cercis canadensis
Description: Moderate to rapid grower when young. Reaching to 30’ tall and 25’ wide. Larger trees found on moist sites. Beautiful purple-pink flowers appear in spring just before leaves emerge. Irregular growth when young eventually developing into graceful flat topped vase shaped tree. Need to prune out “v” shaped crotch branches. Good understory tree.
Light requirements: full sun, partial sun or partial shade
Soil tolerance: clay, sand, loam, alkaline, acidic, occasionally wet, well-drained
Drought tolerance: high
3. Chinese Pistache: Pistacia chinensis
Description: Small deciduous tree, 25’ to 35’ tall and up to 25 to 35’
wide. Moderate growth with upright to rounded growth habit. Leaves are
simple, alternate 2” to 4” in length. Small greenish flowers in early spring
and orange to red fall color make this a good specimen tree for the
landscape.
Light Requirements: full sun
Soil Tolerance: clay, sand, loam, acidic, slightly alkaline, well-drained
Drought Tolerance: Moderate
4. Okame Cherry: Prunus x incam ‘Okame’
Description: Small deciduous tree, 15’ to 25’ tall and up to 20’ wide. Moderate growth with upright to rounded growth habit. Leaves are simple, alternate 1” to 2 ½” in length. Showy single pink flowers on red stems in early spring and copper orange to yellow fall color make this a good specimen tree for the landscape.
Light Requirements: full sun, afternoon shade is nice
Soil Tolerance: clay, sand, loam, acidic, slightly alkaline, well-drained
Drought Tolerance: Moderate
Larger Canopy Trees
5. Bald Cypress: Taxodium distichum
Description: Pyramidal tree 50’-70’ tall, 20’ – 30’ wide. Foliage is feathery sprays of narrow 1/2” long needles yellow tinged green. Foliage turns bronze before fall drop. Shaggy cinnamon colored bark. Female specimens will sport 1” cones in fall. Tough, tolerant tree.
Light requirements: full sun
Soil tolerance: any except strong alkaline
Drought tolerance: High and does well in wet conditions as well
6. Nuttall Oak: Quercus nuttall
Description: Symmetrical tree 60’ to 80’ tall and 35 to 50’ wide. Leaves dull, dark green lobed 4” to 8” long and 2” to 5” wide. Acorns small and reddish-brown ¾” to 1 ¼” long
Light requirements: full sun
Soil tolerance: clay, sand, loam, acidic, extended flooding, well-drained
Drought tolerance: moderate
7. Shumard Oak: Quercus shumard
Description: Large straight tree 60’ to 90’ tall. Leaves 6” to 8” long and 4” to 6” wide margined with 7-9 keenly divided bristle tipped lobes. Often subdivided into secondary lobes by rounded sinuses. Acorns up to 1’ long and 1” in diameter.
Light requirements: full sun
Soil tolerance: moist but well-drained
Drought tolerance: High

Arbor Day 2009
Project ReLeaf will replace and increase the lost canopy by planting 1,000 five gallon trees, one for each residence, business, and city property affected by the tornado, on February 21, 2009.
Church of Living Water (staging area for event) 435 Sheila Blvd. Prattville, AL Event commences at 8 a.m. until all 1,000 trees have been planted and watered.
